Blood Cells : Production of Blood Cells

Blood Cell Types
It would be an understatement to say that blood cells are extremely crucial in the human body. Blood cells are blood carriers in .....
The red blood cell, the white blood cell and platelet are known as blood cells. These blood cells are components of the blood or plasma. The red blood cell functions in carrying oxygen from the lungs to the different tissues and muscles of the body. On the other hand the white blood cells help in immunizing the body. The platelets facilitate clotting of blood.

Bone Marrow: Blood cell is primarily produced in the bone marrow of large bones. A bone marrow is a jelly like substance that constitutes a bone. The human marrow contains fat, blood, and special cells that turn into blood cells. There are two types of bone marrows in the body. The marrow that produces blood is known as the red bone marrow and the one that does not produce blood or has stopped producing blood is known as the yellow bone marrow. In children the marrow most of the bones produces blood. However, in adults only the marrow of certain bones such as the spine, ribs, pelvis and other large bones, produce blood.

Process of Blood Formation: All blood cells originate from the same stem cell. A stem cell is the main cell which generates blood and other tissues. Blood is generated from pluripotential hematopoietic stem cells. These stem cells are present in the red bone marrow. After the blood cell is produced from the stem cell, it seeps into the blood and passes into the bone and into the bloodstream. Production of one blood cell requires four days. Different kinds of cells have different lifespan. The red blood cells have a lifespan of 120 days in a bloodstream, platelets about 10 days; and the white blood cells can last anywhere from days to years.
White Blood Cell Disease
White Blood Cells are extremely crucial in the proper functioning of the immune system of the body. It is imperative that the WBC .....

Production of New Cells: The body has a feedback system that tells when to produce new cells. When the body contains less number of red blood cells, the oxygen content on the body reduces. This stimulates the kidneys to produce a hormone known as erythropoietin. This hormone stimulates the stem cells in the marrow. After which the marrow generates more blood cells.
