White blood cell scan is basically a test that is used to detect infections and inflammation. It engages radioactively labeling some of the patients of white blood cells and then taking images of their passage through the body. It also comprises of information about abnormal cell structure and the presence of immature cells. There are various types of white blood cells also known as leukocytes that normally appear in the blood. The differential determines the relative percentages of the different types of cells in the blood, notes any abnormal appearance of the cells, and the presence of any irregular immature cells.

Testing Adults: Blood will be drawn from a vein also known as venipuncture, usually from the inside of the elbow or the back of the hand. The puncture site is cleaned with antiseptic, and a tourniquet that is an elastic band or blood pressure cuff is placed around the upper arm to apply pressure and restrict blood flow through the vein. This leads to veins below the tourniquet to distend, which is filled with blood. A needle is then inserted into the vein, and the blood is collected into an airtight vial or a syringe. During the process, the tourniquet is removed to restore circulation. Once the blood has been collected, the needle is removed, and the puncture site is enclosed to stop any bleeding. There is no special preparation required for adults before the test.

Testing Infants Or Young Children: The area is washed with antiseptic and punctured with a sharp needle or a lancet. The blood might be collected in a pipette, on a slide, onto a test strip, or into a small container. Cotton or a bandage might be applied to the puncture site if there is any continued bleeding. After the specimen is unruffled from an adult or child, a drop of blood is placed on a glass slide. A smear is prepared and stained to differentiate the various types of white blood cells for a manual differential. The physical and psychological preparation one can give for this or any test or procedure depends on your child's age, interests, previous experiences, and level of trust. When the needle is inserted to draw blood, some people might feel a moderate pain, while others feel only a prick or stinging sensation. Afterward, there might be some throbbing.

This is the most common method of conducting a white blood cell check. These tests can reveal enormous amounts of information about the individual’s health.
