Recent research testifies that red wine is heart-healthy and has cholesterol-lowering properties. This research has concentrated on the “French paradox” where it has found that the French consume fat-saturated foods like organ meat, cheese, and eggs but have a lower rate of heart disease than Americans. The only explanation for this is the moderate consumption of wine by the French. According to the Wine Institute, the French drink nine times more wine than the Americans. Studies have proved that red wine decreases the incidence of heart attacks in both men and women. In fact, a moderate intake of red wine can stave off a heart attack in those who have suffered from one. This is because red wine can increase HDL (high density lipoprotein) or good cholesterol levels and decrease LDL (low density lipoprotein) or bad cholesterol levels. Thus red wine reduces blood clots and blood vessel damage caused by fat deposits.

How wine lowers cholesterol

Red wine lowers cholesterol levels because of the flavonoids found in red grapes.
Flavonoids have antioxidant properties and reduce artery wall plaque formation. The polyphenolic antioxidants present in the red wine, resveratrol and proanthocyanidins provide cardio protection by being antioxidants while its alcoholic content provides cardio protection by adapting the heart to oxidative stress. Resveratrol is found in grape skins and seeds and prevents blood clotting. So what is the ratio of wine that is beneficial for men and women? A standard bottle of wine contains seven and eight drinks, so the safe moderate intake is calculated as ¼ to ½ bottle for men and 1/8 to ¼ bottle for women.

Research has proved that drinking moderate amounts of red wine can be heart-friendly. There is overwhelming evidence that moderate wine consumption can reduce the risk of heart disease. It is estimated that there are 400 substances in wine that raise HDL levels, while lowering LDL levels. Generally, red wine consumption should not exceed two glasses per day. To capitalize on wine’s heart-friendly reputation one enterprising manufacturer has even introduced a red wine pill made from the skins of merlot grapes, which can keep blood vessels healthy. So raise a toast to wine!
