Many people in this world are suffering from various diseases such as heart attack, obesity etc. due to high levels of cholesterol. Cholesterol a substance present in our body is not harmful for us but when it gets excessive in its degree then it leads to lots of problems and diseases and sometimes it may take your life also.
WHAT IS CHOLESTEROL
Cholesterol in its most basic sense is a soft, waxy substance found among the lipids (fats) in the bloodstream and in all your body cells. Cholesterol doesn’t get dissolved in the blood. They have to be transported to and from the cells by special carriers called Lipoproteins. People get cholesterol generally in two ways: - 1. From body—Mainly the liver produces cholesterol of varying amounts everyday. 2. From food—Food also contain cholesterol such as food from animals. Some examples are egg yolks, meat, poultry, fish, seafood, whole-milk dairy products etc.
DRUGS
There are many drugs that reduce cholesterol level in the body. But they may have some side effects also. A class of modern drugs called the STATIN drugs has been successful in lowering cholesterol level. Some of the Statin drugs are Norvir, Zocor, Lipitor, and Lescol etc. Another class of drug that is useful is Bile Acid Sequestrates. These drugs catalyze the secretion of bile acids from the liver, which helps in reducing the cholesterol. Some of them are Colestid, Questran etc. Nicotinic acids or Niacin also help in combating cholesterol. Another class of drugs is the Fibric Acids. These drugs not only combat cholesterol that is harmful to the body but also increase the level of those cholesterols, which are good for the body. Some of them are Lopid and Tricor.
