Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME). This syndrome usually affects the central nervous system. As the name suggests, this results in generalized fatigue.
Symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome : Due to prolonged generalized fatigue the brain activity of the patient deteriorates. Lack of concentration and impaired memory are the most common symptoms of this disorder. It may also lead to abnormalities in the immune system of the body. Thus further resulting in lowering the leukocyte count i.e. white blood cell count, of the blood. Minor symptoms include muscle pain, muscle tenderness and joint pain. Through viral screen lowering of the white blood cell count can be detected. Tests for detecting abnormal responses by adrenal glands can also lead to the diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome. Tests conducted to detect the serotonin receptors present in hypothalamus also prove to be helpful in diagnosing chronic fatigue syndrome. Researchers have also defined the criteria for diagnosing this syndrome. Those diagnostic criteria are CDC criteria, Oxford criteria, additional symptoms and laboratory tests.
