Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) was first named in 1980s. Although the exact origin of the disease is unknown, this disease has now become an issue of great concern. Chronic fatigue is more common among women then among men. However symptoms shown vary according to the patient. This syndrome is also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis.
Even children may not be spared by this disease. The causes of this disease in children may be due to poor content of iron in the blood i.e. anemia and low blood sugar level i.e. hypoglycemia. Environmental allergies, hypotension and psychiatric and neurological problems may also be responsible for this disease. In some cases endocrine dysfunction may also lead to chronic fatigue syndrome. Some researchers have blamed certain viruses for causing chronic fatigue syndrome.
Symptoms of CFS in Children : Child suffering from fatigue since six months may be suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome. This leads to a 50% of activity reduction. The child may also suffer from fever, headache and soar throat. Disturbed sleep and insomnia may also prevail. Complains of painful lymph nodes and muscle weakness are also common. The child may face depression, lack of concentration and interest. The child may face prolonged fatigue after exercising. The child may also suffer from migratory arthralgias. Palpable or tender lymph nodes are also some of the chronic fatigue syndrome symptoms observed in children. The child may have to face attacks of nervousness and anxiety and insecurity. Chronic fatigue syndrome may eventually lead to memory lapse. It may also lead to enlarged throat glands and multi-joint pain.
Treating Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in Children : In order to shun chronic fatigue syndrome, the child could be subjected to regular and planed exercise. This would make the child energetic and physically active. Stress management and reduction techniques can help the child to control over its illness. A healthy and nutritious diet can also help the child to fight chronic fatigue syndrome. Alternative therapy is also suggested to children suffering from this syndrome. Acupuncture, yoga and meditation are some of these therapies. These therapies bring mental peace and thus help in reducing fatigue and stress.
