Chronic fatigue syndrome is a disorder in the central nervous system and immune systems of a person. Chronic fatigue is a complex disorder characterized by profound fatigue and weakness, which is not improved by bed rest. Affected person sometimes cannot even do the daily routine tasks such as dressing bathing and eating. Chronic fatigue is a very common illness. It is common in all age groups, including young children and teenagers. Headaches, sore throats, anxiety and depression are the other symptoms of chronic fatigue.
Chronic Fatigue is often thought to be a fairly new disorder. However some similar pathological conditions have been described in medical literature since the eighteenth century. Some small outbreaks of similar disorders have also been recorded in the medical books since the 1930s. Some of these diseases are linked with bacterial, viral, or protozoal infections such as yellow fever, hepatitis, influenza, and malaria.
Fatigue syndromes also have been confused with some other infectious illness. For example, the clinical descriptions of Chronic Fatigue and a rheumatologic disorder fibromyalgia are very similar to each other and overlap considerably.

In the mid 1980s interest in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome was renewed after several studies. In these studies patients with symptoms similar to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome showed higher levels of antibody to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) than the healthy persons. Because of these studies Chronic Fatigue Syndrome like illness became popularly termed as chronic EBV.
In subsequent studies it became clear that EBV antibody titers were not diagnostic for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. It was seen that some healthy people have high EBV titers and some people suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome do not. Now days, it is not considered useful to test for EBV antibodies to in a patient with symptoms suggestive of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
Finally in 1988, the name chronic fatigue syndrome was termed at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) by a group of United States scientists. The word chronic fatigue syndrome is most commonly used today, more particularly in the U.S. Doctors are doing a lot of studies to minimize the risk of cerebral palsy in the new born children.
