Morning HeadachesChronic morning headaches have become a common feature with the changing lifestyles in the society ..... Sinuses are the bony, air-filled cavities connecting to the nose through small openings. These openings are blocked due to excess mucous and become infected and congested, when a person suffers from a cold or allergy. Due to the infection and congestion of sinusitis, sinus headaches are experienced.
Symptoms can be listed as fever, swelling in the face, green or yellow discharge from the nasal region, pain in the upper teeth, cheeks, forehead and around the eyes, stuffiness in the nasal region, swelling in the membranes lining the sinus.
Air, pus and mucus accumulates in the sinuses, due to congestion, and pain occurs in all the affected regions mentioned above. The headache takes a turn to the worse when bent down or forward or when lied down.
Common colds and allergies are the most common causes. When a person catches a cold, the bacteria and viruses infect the sinuses lining and this results in the headaches.
People who are more prone common cold or allergies (especially dust allergy) may often suffer from sinus headaches. In some cases, people who are born with a deformity in the nose or those who suffer injuries to the bones in the nose also suffer from this.

1. A steam vaporizer or cool-mist humidifier, steam from a hot water basin, steam from hot shower can be used and the dry air can be humidified to treat sinus headaches.
2. Placing a hot compress on the sinuses for around three minutes and then a cold compress for 30 seconds and repeating this procedure thrice at a time and two to six times each day provides relief to sinus headaches.
3. Nasal Irrigation or Nasal Rinsing involves cleaning the sinuses region of the mucus, allergens, dust, bacteria and other irritants, which reduces the inflammation. This helps to reduce the swelling, if any, of the sinuses region and improves the nasal drainage system.

Other medications like aspiri, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, naproxen, or a combination of these can be taken after consulting a physician.
5. Decongestants and antihistamines provide relief in case of sinus headaches due to allergies. Steroid sprays may also be used.
