Rapid heart beat in medical terms known as tachycardia or fast heartbeat. The heart normally beats less than 100 times per minute in adults and slightly more than 100 times in children. A rapid heart rate is defined as the heart rate that is faster than normal. In children the heart beat is slightly faster but it is considered to be normal. Heart rate increases due to increased physical activity, stress or other medical conditions that affect the heart.
There are many conditions that cause rapid heart rate and sometimes no cause can be found. Anxiety, fear, fever and anger can cause rapid heart rate. Also disorders like anemia or dehydration affect heart rate. Variations in blood pressure or hypotension often cause rapid heart rate. Intake of caffeine, herbal therapies such as ephedra, and other medicinal drugs can affect the heart rate. Cocaine abuse and alcohol withdrawal are other major causes of rapid heart rate. Serious blood infections like pneumonia or nerve damage affects the nerves attached to the heart. Diseases like Diabetes that upset LDL levels can cause rapid heart rate. Other heart diseases such as atrial fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia may cause irregular heartbeats due to salt imbalances and also heart attack. Some heart defects known as congenital heart failure that cannot pump oxygenated blood effectively also affect the heart rate.
Most of the times rapid heart beat is conditional and may occur due to situation. This may normalize within minutes. Sometimes rapid heart rate can be a serious cause due to some diseases or infections and need medical treatment to normalize the heart rate. This can sometimes be fatal caused due to heart attacks. It is important to know the symptoms of rapid heart rate to avoid future complications of the heart and other medical conditions.

Rapid heart rate can be diagnosed by an ECG, chest x-ray, echocardiogram, thyroid function tests to diagnose high thyroid levels and arterial blood gases test to measure the level of oxygen in the blood. Although no symptoms occur sometimes rapid heart beat cannot be prevented. But with proper diagnosis and medication it can avoid major illness of heart.
