The number was actually more than the peoples killed in the First World War. It was also known as the Spanish flu or the la grippe it was indeed a global disaster. The epidemic marked its beginning in the fall of 1918-19 when the First World War was winding up in Europe. The scourge ravaged almost one fifth of the world population within just a period of mere two years. It was a very uncommon trait of the flu that mostly people of the age group 20- 40 were affected whether in general it is observed that influenza is a killer of the elderly and the children. The

Although it is named as the Spanish flu it is believed that the virus which was the root cause of deadly epidemic, it is thought to be originated in China. The name actually was derived from the fact that the epidemic caused large mortalities in Spain which nearly numbered to 8 million in the month of May, 1918. The symptoms of the disease were as simple with usual sore throat, headaches and fever, where as the Spanish version of the outbreak was more complicated accompanied by extreme chills and fatigue which was often caused by the retention or accumulation of the fluid in the lungs. This deadly variant of the influenza was medically designated as Influenza A or A/H1N1. As the beginning of the 20th century marked with the inventions automobile transport, steam boats and early air transportation it was very easy for the infected people to carry the ultra contagious air borne virus into the populated cities and the commercial ports thus spreading it like a wild fire. The military personnel returning from the war front of the First World War also proved to be important carriers of this killer influenza.
