The history of the bird flu and similar viruses can be taken as the greatest warning against the epidemics. Recent incidents have shown that we need to take potential bird flu pandemic very seriously otherwise it can cause more problems for mankind. The history of the bird flu suggests that tens of millions of people could die from this epidemic. The history of bird flu can also suggest the precautions that human beings should take to stop this threatening disease. Although according to some researchers the history of bird flu goes back to 422 B.C. where a major epidemic similar to this was recorded by Hippocrates. But this information is not confirmed. The mostly accepted origination of this disease is said to be the early 1900s.
In recent times the US Centers for disease control has examined virus samples from the dead bodies of sufferers of the 1918 “Spanish flu”. The results of this research suggest that the Spanish flu virus that broke out in 1918 have most likely started as bird flu too.

The first confirmed report of the bird flu is the outbreak in 1997 in Hong Kong. It was the first time the virus had spread to humans, but it was much more speedily contained. In that outbreak a total of 18 people were hospitalized with six reported deaths. In the year of 1997 about 1.5 million chickens were killed in an effort to remove the source of the virus.
In 1999 again in Hong Kong, there were confirmed cases of avian influenza A H9N2 in 2 children. Fortunately both patients recovered, and no additional cases were confirmed.
In 2003 two cases of avian influenza A (H5N1) infection was recorded among members of a Hong Kong family in China. The original cause was not determined. Two people of that family died but no additional cases were reported. Also the bird flu virus A (H7N7) infections contaminated the poultry workers and their families in the Netherlands during an outbreak of bird flu. In this outbreak more than 80 cases of H7N7 bird flu illness were reported and 1 patient died. Another bird flu virus was confirmed in a child in Hong Kong. The child was taken to the hospital but thankfully the child recovered.
