Its seriousness is more increased by the limited medicines and preventive vaccines for it. Its recent pandemic broke out in Asia cannot be neglected and the world should equip to prepare for such disaster in the near future. Bird flu is basically an infection of birds with various forms of influenza virus. This lethal virus is first noticed in the Spanish flu in 1918. All the strains of viruses are not pathogenic and cause only mild symptom but some forms are highly virulent and cause severe complication. Migratory birds are highly responsible for the infection in the domestic poultry stocks. Infected birds carry the virus in their saliva and it also come along with their feces and thus domestic birds coming in contact with their saliva or feces get infected.
Influenza virus mainly attacks the birds and initially mild symptoms are seen and finally it may attack the human beings. There are certain strains, which on repeated attack on the human being may undergo certain genetic changes. And as a result of which it gives, rise to severe complication, which may lead to death of the patient. One specific strain of influenza virus known as H5N1, which is more pathogenic and very easily can undergo mutation. This results into fatal effect in the human being. Researchers and health officials became very cautious regarding the mutation of influenza virus. They started studying the biochemical nature of the virus. They found out the protein of the virus is undergoing drastic change and the further change may constantly change the nature of the virus. They virus may become more pathogenic and may spread from people to people thus giving rise to epidemic break. The pathogenic nature of this virus is severely seen in countries like turkey and Vietnam. In January 2006 there was a break out of bird flu in turkey and it has cost the lives of fifteen people. This raised the eyebrows of concerned health officials and they are trying out for the alternative to control the mutation, which may lead to devastation worldwide. In Vietnam also bird flu plays the destructive role and it also went genetic changes and thus this disease also attacks human being. So it has become an imperative for the whole world to provide co-operation and should involve in the research for the vaccines to prevent from this lethal disease.
