Sometimes the conditions may also lead to life-threatening complications. As of the present, scientific researches has shown that bird flu is hard for humans to contract. But according to the major health organizations there can be a possible major flu outbreak if the virus mutates into a form that can spread easily from person to person. If such a situation arises, it is possible that a global epidemic like the rival the flu pandemic of 1918 and 1919, which claimed millions of lives worldwide may occur. Hence researchers and scientists over the world are engaged in sorting out options for a vaccine. The surveillance programs are conducted in some of the nations that have been prone to the outbreak of an epidemic or have chances of falling prey to such a condition in the near future. Strict vaccination, vigilance on the local bird markets and poultry farms and prevention of smuggling of the birds are the main features of this program. Travelers are advised to avoid rural areas, small farms and especially any close contact with domesticated fowl.
