Evidences from the pandemic of 1918 caused by the avian flu virus have shown that it can readily kill the young and the healthy particularly those who are in the age group of 20-40. Scientists have also estimated that that flu virus may mutate and make itself viable to transmit from human to human. Such a possible condition may give rise to another pandemic it has been predicted to claim approximately around 200,000 and 150 million lives around the globe. The flu virus, which is airborne in nature, can also spread very easily through coughs and sneezes.
One of the most significant step in the protection against bird flu is get vaccinated. Although till date any prominent vaccine has not been developed that gives total protection against the flu virus. But there are certain anti viral drugs like the Relenza and Tami flu that are more effective in dealing with the avian virus with a hard hand. Health officials suggest that certain peoples like the children and the elderly in the age group of 55-70 and above should get vaccination each year to stay immune and to stay clear of chances in having the virus. Things can also be brought under control by raising awareness among the peoples at social levels. If necessary medical advise should be sought after.
Prevention is considered as the first line of defense against the protection of bird flu and in controlling its spread. It is suggested to avoid direct contact with the poultry or any other infected birds and animals. The avian virus can spread effectively through contamination of the feces and secretions of the poultry so it is advisable to avoid those places where the live birds are raised and kept, places such as open markets where the birds are slaughtered. Maintenance of good hygiene can also be very effective in controlling the disease as well as to get protection from it. Frequent hand washing with alcohol-based chemicals may be counted as important initiative step in this regard. The avian viruses can be easily destroyed by heat and hence it is advised that all poultry products should be thoroughly cooked before consumption.
