Erectile dysfunction is one of the most common disorders in men. Every year millions of people all around the world are affected by erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction refers to a disorder where the penis is not able to get or maintain an erection. The causes maybe physiological or psychological. The cause is said to be physiological if there is no erection at all anytime. The cause may be psychological in case there is no erection sometimes. Hence the disorder should be diagnosed by the doctor so that treatment can be started immediately. In most cases, the treatment depends on the cause.
One of the most common treatments for erectile dysfunction is oral medications. Medications like Viagra, Levitra and Cialis are normally prescribed by doctors. The other options for treating the disorder are the use of vacuum devices, surgery and penile implants. Herbal supplements are also prescribed by doctors as they are more effective and they have fewer side effects. Vacuum devices are a non drug therapy for erectile dysfunction. In the case of a vacuum device, a constriction device is attached to the head of the penis and a vacuum created so that blood flows in the penis and hence the penis becomes erect. The vacuum device can be worn during the sexual act for half an hour. The device consists of three parts, viz a plastic cylinder which is placed on the penis, a pump that creates the vacuum and draws air in the cylinder and the elastic band that is placed on the base of the penis to maintain the erection even after the cylinder is removed.
In the case of penile implants, the implants are surgically embedded into the scrotum. The fluid is then pumped through a holding chamber into hollow cylinders placed within the two chambers inside the penis. The patient can control the inflation and deflation of the cylinder. Penile implants have proved to be quite successful on patients. The only problem is that complication like infections can happen which will lead to removing the prosthesis. There is the option of vascular surgery as well. The surgery is performed to restore the blood flow to the penile area. However surgeries are not preferred by many patients in the present because of the complications involved with surgery. Psychological therapy or behavior modification is being preferred by many doctors as the most natural and side effects free treatment for erectile dysfunction.
