Mens Health : Treatments For Erectile Dysfunction
There are a lot of treatments for erectile dysfunction. Treatments vary from oral medications, injections, vacuum pumps and surgeries. Erectile dysfunction is a very common sexual disorder in men due to which the penis is not able to get an erection or maintain an erection. Erection is hampered when the blood cannot flow from the veins to the penis. There are many causes of erectile dysfunction, the chief amongst them being diabetes, kidney failure, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels in the body.
The treatments for erectile dysfunction vary from oral medications to injections to surgeries to vacuum pumps. Let us discuss each treatment for erectile dysfunction in detail. The first treatment for erectile dysfunction is finding out the cause for erectile dysfunction. Once the cause for erectile dysfunction is detected, appropriate treatment can be administered to the patient. Oral medications like Viagra, Levitra and Cialis are normally given to the patient. These medications are approved by the FDA and hence can be taken with the prescription of the doctor. Many people are now going for natural remedies such as herbal supplements that are safer and more effective. Erectile dysfunction is often a psychological problem in some patients. In this case the patient needs psychotherapy than anything else.
Vacuum devices are also used for erectile dysfunction as they help to draw blood in the penis due to which the penis becomes firm and becomes erect. The device consists of three parts such as a plastic cylinder that is placed over the penis, a pump that draws out air from the cylinder and an elastic band that is placed at the base of the penis which helps to maintain the erection while the sexual act is taking place. Penile implants are also a common treatment for erectile dysfunction. In this case, the implants are surgically embedded in the scrotum instead of using vacuum devices. Fluid is pumped from a holding chamber into hallow cylinders that are placed within the two chambers inside the penis. The patient can inflate or deflate the hallow cylinders as desired.
Vascular surgery can also be carried out on patients with serious erectile dysfunction disorder. Surgery is performed by doctors to restore the flow of blood in the penis and make it erect during the sexual act. However surgeries are found to be expensive and may also lead to complications like infections. Hence surgeries are not preferred by many patients.
