Folic acid also called as folate, which is the anion form of the substance, is basically a form of a water-soluble B vitamin. Folic acid is very essential for performance and maintenance of several vital function of the body. Especially it is necessary during the periods of rapid cell division and growth such as infancy and pregnancy. In case of men folic acid is very important in gene function. Recent studies have linked folic acid with male fertility. It has been found that men with low sperm counts were deficient in one type of folic acid and in some cases; low sperm counts can make men less fertile. Folic acid has also been found to be necessary for DNA synthesis. Low levels of folic acid have been associated with a decreased sperm count and decreased sperm motility. In a recent study, the combination of zinc and folic acid resulted in a 74% increase in total normal sperm count in sub fertile men.
How To Increase Folic Acid Levels:
Leafy vegetables such as spinach and turnip greens, dried beans and peas, fortified cereal products, and some other fruits and vegetables are rich sources of folate. Dark leafy greens asparagus, turnip, beet and mustard greens, Brussels sprouts, lima beans, soybeans, beef liver, brewer's yeast, root vegetables, whole grains, wheat germ, bulgur wheat, kidney beans, white beans, lima beans, mung beans oysters, salmon, orange juice, avocado, and milk are some of the commonly available food items that has a significant percentage of folic acid. Some breakfast cereals like ready-to-eat and others are usually fortified with 25 percent or 100 percent of the recommended dietary allowance for folic acid. Other than green leafy vegetables sources of Folic acid include, chicken liver, beef liver, lentils, wheat germ, spears, asparagus, papaya, broccoli, cantaloupe, eggs, canned salmon. However with increased cases of folate deficiency manufacturers are now required by the FDA to add folic acid to enriched cereal grain products such as flour, pasta, and rice. So it is better replace the regular cereals with these and add a bowl of fresh salad to a daily diet.
