Pityriasis lichenoides is the name given to an uncommon rash of unknown cause. Its mild form is known as "pityriasis lichenoides chronica (PLC)". The more severe form is known as "pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta (PLEVA)" (Mucha-Haberman disease).
PLEVA can be termed as a hypersensitive reaction to a some sort of a microorganism. Any specific bacteria or virus has not been named as yet though. It is not considered to be contagious.PLEVA affects adolescents and young adults more often.Males are known to have higher chance of having PLEVA than females.It is very rare in infants and in old age.The patient usually feels normal, but sometimes the the appearance of skin lesions can be accompanied by mild bouts of fever or headache.The reddish -brown spots called as lesions, are about 3 to 15mm in diameter .It could take weeks for this spot to flatten out, and it will leave a small brown mark later..PLEVA results in more irritable crusted spots or blisters, which heal to leave small scars looking like those from chicken pox. PLEVA may cause mouth ulcers.The lesions generally occur on the trunk, thighs and the inner aspect of the upper arms. PLEVA rarely affects the face or scalp, but it can arise at any other site. It may last for months or even several years, with crops of new lesions appearing every few weeks.

In case of acute form, the lesions occur over a period of weeks or months and can continue for years also. Chronic form will be less hemorrhagic but more scaly.PLEVA may be accompanied by low-grade fever, lymphadenopathy, malaise, myalgias and headache may precede or appear simultaneously with the eruption. Sometimes, PLEVA patients may develop complications like bacteraemia, central nervous system involvement, abdominal pain and interstitial pneumonia.
The treatments for Pleva are different because the disorder by itself is in a variable form.Antibiotics,UV therapy,steroids,are some frequently used PLEVA management therapies.It is also worthwhile to note that PLEVA is predominantly prevalent in children . The treatment methods also change due to this.UV light therapy is considered safe option for children.
