Vitamin is an organic substance or a hormone, which is a very essential nutrient for the body. There are different vitamins present in the body, which is obtained, from different forms of diet. All the vitamins found in the body are very useful for different metabolic activities as all of them are entrusted upon with special functions. Among these vitamins d is very important as the metabolism of the body is concerned. Vitamin d, which is also known as calciferol is a fat-soluble vitamin. It can be obtained from food as well as from ultra-violet rays, which is also very rich in vitamin d. the function involves maintaining the blood level of calcium and phosphorous. It is mostly associated with keeping the bones healthy by maintaining the hormonal balance.

Earlier vitamin d is only known to help in the metabolism in the body by properly maintaining the calcium and phosphorous and thus protecting the bones from getting injured easily. But recent studies show that apart from keeping the bone strong it also has some other benefits too. it enhances the strength and protect it from sclerosis . One of the striking effects of vitamin d is that it can decrease the risk for various cancers and mostly the skin cancer. When a person exposed to ultraviolet rays of sun, the production of vitamin d in the body increases and this serve as a protective sheath to ultraviolet rays, which is the cause for lung cancer. Deficiency of vitamin d causes rickets in children and osteomalacia, which are the disorder in bones and the bones become very weak. It is generally seen in the cases of old people and thus also limits their outdoor activities and finally this is a major cause of bed-ridden and getting attacked by various other diseases. Low intake of vitamin d causes osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. Osteoporosis is characterized by decomposition of calcium level of bones and thus the bones become more fragile and more prone to fracture. Osteoarthritis is also a disorder of bone in which cartilage become more fragile and can break easily.

As the deficiency of vitamin d can cause various bone disorder so it is always important to take adequate amount of food through which the proper amount of vitamin d can be achieved. Cod liver oil and various fishes such as salmon; mackerel and sardines are good source of vitamin d.
