The word vitamin originates from two words namely, 'vital amines'. Vitamins are of different types. Each type is equally important. A vital vitamin out of them is the vitamin D. it is a fat-soluble vitamin. Vitamin D is very important for the development of bones in our body. It plays an important role in the metabolism of calcium. Moreover, it assists in the absorption of other minerals into the bone. It thus helps in maintaining a decent calcium balance in our body. This in turn helps in controlling blood pressure. A deficiency of vitamin D in our body may lead to a disease known as Rickets. During the secretion of insulin by the pancreas sufficient vitamin D level is required. Otherwise it may lead to complications.

In order to shun all the problems related to the deficiency of vitamin D, it is necessary to take in proper levels of vitamin D. Vitamin D is mainly synthesized by the skin. Thus, exposure to early sun can be a good source of vitamin D. moreover; green leafy vegetables are rich in all kind of vitamins. Fortified milk or goat's and cow's milk may also contain some amount of vitamin D and calcium. Egg and egg white too are rich in vitamin D. eating fishes such as salmon, sardines, shrimp and cod liver can help in maintaining sufficient vitamin D levels.

If your diet is not containing adequate amount of vitamin D, then your body shows some signs indicating a change in your diet. When your food needs to be rich in vitamin D you face problems such as, unusual pain in the bones. Frequent fractures and bone deformity in amongst children suggest a poor intake of vitamin D. lack of exposure to sunlight can also lead to deficiency of vitamin D or osteoporosis.
