Vitamin D : vitamin d testing
Calcium And Vitamin DIn order to lead a healthy life it is very important to eat the right kind of food. This is because; through food we can fulfill the nutrient requirement of our ..... Vitamin D tests are mainly done to get specific information about the weakness, bone malfunction or abnormal metabolism of calcium (which is reflected by abnormal calcium, phosphate or PTH tests). It occurs due to result of deficiency or excess of vitamin D. Vitamin D tests are sometimes used to monitor and assure individuals with diseases that interfere with fat absorption, such as cystic fibrosis and Crohn's disease that they have adequate amounts of vitamin D, it is so because vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin and is absorbed from the intestine like a fat. . Vitamin D tests are also are used to determine the efficiency of treatment when vitamin D, calcium, phosphate, and magnesium supplementation is prescribed. These tests calculate the concentrations of different forms of vitamin D in our blood. The word vitamin D actually refers to a number of different but related chemical compounds, among them some of which are inactive and some of which are active forms. The two most general vitamin D tests measure Calcidiol (an inactive form) and Calcitriol (the active form). The test for Calcidiol (sometimes called 25-hydroxy-vitamin D) is used to assure that the body has sufficient vitamin D supply. The test for Calcitriol is used to assure that the kidney is converting an appropriate amount of calcidiol to the active hormone calcitriol. The main role of the active hormone calcitriol is to help control the incorporation of calcium, phosphorus, and (to a lesser extent) magnesium. Vitamin D is very important for the growth and health of bone. Without it, bones will be soft, deformed, and unable to repair themselves usually, resulting in diseases called Rickets in children and Osteomalacia in adults.
Low blood levels of Calcidiol means that the human body is not getting sufficient exposure to sunlight or enough dietary vitamin D to meet the required level. Possibility of problem with its absorption from the intestine is also there in this case or that sufficient is not being transformed to Calcidiol in the lever. High levels of calcidiol generally reflect surplus supplementation from vitamin pills or other dietary supplements. Low levels of calcitriol are often seen in Case of kidney disease and are one of the initial changes to occur in persons with early kidney failure. High levels of calcitriol may occur when there is surplus parathryoid hormone or when there are diseases, such as sarcoidosis or some lymphomas, which can make calcitriol outside of the kidneys.
