There are many misconceptions about the teenage pregnancy rate in today's world. With that said, it is important for a person to be armed with proper facts and figures that pertain to teenage pregnancy rates in the 21st century. Through this article, some basic statistical information is provided regarding teenage pregnancy rates in the 21st century.

While it is tragic that babies have babies, the good news is that teen pregnancy rates seem to be dropping according to the Center for Disease Control Statistical Database. In teenagers, the birth rates for adolescents fell in 2003 reaching historic lows. This was for all age groups and, for the most part, all ethnic populations as well.

Births for young teenagers, females aged 10 - 14 years, fell to 0.6 births per 1,000 females compared with the 2002 rate of 0.7. For ethnic populations, the National Vital Statistics Reports listed for September 8, 2005, of Mexican teenagers, 93.2 per 1,000 aged 15 - 19 years of age were having babies. Non-Hispanic black teenagers were reported at 64.7 per 1, 000 females while 27.4 per 1,000 non-Hispanic white teenagers gave birth in the statistical period.

Birth rates in all ethnic and age groups have fallen over the 1991 - 2003 period. Non-Hispanic black teenagers experienced the most marked decrease at a 45 percent drop. However, the rate for non-Hispanic black teenagers, aged 15 - 17 has fallen more than half. In 1991, the rate was 86.1 births per 1,000 down to 38.7 births per 1,000 in 2003.

This report shows that teenage pregnancy rates have fallen substantially since 1990. This generally mirrors a decline in teenage birth rates as well. Pregnancy rates are computed from the sum of live births, induced abortions and fetal losses. At the time of the report, the most current rates were available through 2000. In 2000, the teenage pregnancy rate was 84.5 per 1,000 females aged 15 - 19. This is the lowest rate reported since 1976 when the CDC national estimates first became available. The teen pregnancy rate has dropped 27 percent since its peak in 1990.
